Making a Difference for Phortse School

One of our teams major objectives has been to support the small Phorste Primary School. Our fundraising, a school mufti day, plus funds from other students and parents contributed $2000 US to the school.  Our morning at the school will remain as one of the special highlights of our trip. We arrived at 10.00am for the school assembly on their playing area. The 35 students all neatly lined up and many of the families also there.

They started with their national song and then we replied with our anthem and our haka. We were presented with several kata, spiritual scarves - very humbling. The students and parents loved the gifts, hats and especially the merino singlets from Weft Knitwear.  We were made to feel very special and were treated to traditional Nepalise and Sherpa dances in their colourful costums.

Pauline read Fox in Socks, one of the books we had given, to a very attentive group. The school has three small class rooms and the money we donated will go towards another classroom. We spent about 20 minutes in class with the students where English is an important focus. Devendra insisted we stay for tea and we enjoyed 2 cups each of a sweet black brew before performing our haka again in farewell.

Traditional Sherpa dance.  You can see the track to Dole on the true right of the valley

  2. Love the photos of the children on this post. My favourite is the wee cutie in the Cookie Monster hoody with the Fox in Socks book with the other little kiddy clutching a singlet and a book. The hats look fabulous!
