Namche to Phortse - Ama Deblam, Yaks and Rhododendrons

Had the wake up call from Dave at 5.30am with breakfast at 6.00am. Another stunner of a day.  Left for Phorste at 6.45am and enjoyed spectacular views of Ama Deblam and saw our first real yaks near a beautiful stupa. Stopped for lunch at Mong before heading down through pink lavender and white rhododendrons to cross the Dudh Kosi and climb the 150m to Phortse.  By 1.00pm the whole team was at our lodge ready for lunch of sherpa stew.  At 3.00pm Elsa DAve and I and a meeting with the school principal Devendra to organise our morning. That night we practised our National Anthem and the haka Toia Mai.

Surya Sherpa, Dough, Will and Elsa past one of the many beautiful stupa

Phortse is set on a terrace off the main EBC route so is very traditional with stone walled paddocks farmed by hand to produce raddish, potato and buck wheat.  The potatoes were on the menu and very tasty! We enjoyed our meal in the dining room with a fire fueled by yak dung, very efficient. Interestingly all the young men were away working as sherpa on Everest Base Camp expeditions

The team is acclimatising very well and our day in Phortse aids this.

The village Phortse - pop. about 250
